Poets should stay out of it.
By David Solway
Jan 5, 2010, 14:38

Poets should stay out of it. With very few exceptions (e.g., Auden), when it comes to political issues they are generally uninformed or misinformed--in a word, ignorant--and their depositions are more often than not vitiated by a preening self-regard. See Sam Hamill's anthology for confirmation. Even Dahlia Ravikovitch disappoints, hovering at a very low altitude indeed.

David Solway's most recent book of poetry is The Properties of Things (Biblioasis). His prose study, Hear, O Israel!, appeared in October, 2009 (Mantua Books).
