Another year is ending and as is the wont of such times, a bit of reflection. Poetry Quebec has reached its tenth issue. We have had almost a million hits and about 25,000 individual visits. From around the world! We continually have over two hundred living, breathing individuals reading what our poets are writing, what our reviewers are reviewing, what our interviewees are saying, and what our reporters are reporting.
We continued to add sections to enlarge our scope. We had a special comparative issue that introduced Slovenian poets to our readers and Slovenian poets to Quebec English-language poetry.
We also introduced an Ex-Pats section. We live in a world in which poets, like others, migrate, emigrate, and run away to other places. And they write home.
We established a Table of Contents section that makes browsing easier. We now have a Facebook page as well.
We are also working to make Poetry Quebec better looking. Keep an eye out for our March issue which will be something special in form and content!
The English-language poetry scene has been very active. Wired on Words, The Yellow Door, Twigs, The Visual Arts Center and The Atwater Library reading series have kept readers and listeners traversing Montreal and the province.
There were workshops, book launches, awards, inductions and the Montreal Poetry Prize, a $50,000.00 give-away for one poem.
There is even a play using the Montreal poetry scene as its backdrop: Ars Poetica, by Arthur Holden, is getting ready for its run at Infinitheatre from January 17 to February 12, 2012.
The English-language literary community looks and sounds vibrant and lively, and Poetry Quebec is proud to have a role in making it so.
It is proud to continue the collective consciousness-raising about the important contribution that English language poets have made to Canadian poetry. In keeping with this, Poetry Quebec is devoting its next Issue to Irving Layton. This issue will be launched on March 11, 2011 at Infinitheatre as part of a special celebration-ceremony marking Layton’s centenary. The tribute will feature a who’s who of Montreal poets reading from Layton’s work, a rare book display, film clips, musical and theatrical interpretations of his poems, and a few special guests.
The idea for the celebration originated with Poetry Quebec and has now gone national. Plans are already underway for celebratory events in every province, territory, and in every major city, as well as in Cornerbrook and Bowen Island. And the list is growing. Poetry Quebec is collaborating with Layton’s son, Max, to make this a celebration of this poet’s work in particular and (Canadian) poetry in general.
Stay tuned for updates on the coming events and those who will be participating. In the meantime, have a safe and poetic holiday.
