Officer Cadet Robert Pinkney: Poem

The Fight

Buzzing.

Blasting.

Everywhere.

Turmoil.

Must shield my eyes

The mud flies so high,

To see the enemy as he tries

To, very still, lie

Helmeted head down.

Don’t move.

Stay still.

Stay alive, in this

Chaos.

Here they come,

All dressed in muddy grey.

There is a small sum

Who I must dispatch to-day.

Keep the targets.

Take aim.

Steady.

Courage now, banish

Fear.

Maintain order,

Keep the mark.

Time grows shorter.

Anticipate that which will hark

The beginning of my fight.

Listen.

Await the command.

Now,

Fire!
